Preparing a Collaboration Plan
Step 1: Read the Case Scenario that follows:
Andrew is a 5-year-old boy in a full-day kindergarten program in Mrs. Browns classroom. During the first few weeks of school, Mrs. Brown notices that Andrew is struggling to adjust to the kindergarten day. In particular, he has difficulty following directions and making transitions from one activity to the next. However, other children are also having difficulty adjusting, so Mrs. Brown continues to observe Andrew. As the weeks follow and most of the class settles into the daily routine, Andrews difficulties seem to increase. Mrs. Browns observation notes identify concerns about Andrews behavior and development, including the following:
Early Literacy Skills:
Limited expressive vocabulary outside of his areas of interest, which include animals, and especially dogs
Limited sight-word vocabulary for kindergarten
Fine-Motor Skills:
Poor fine-motor skills, especially with cutting
Difficulties using a computer mouse
Poor eye-hand coordination (also noticed by the P.E. teacher)
Behavioral Concerns:
Frequent interruptions, for example, Andrew will ask unrelated questions and change topics during daily group times
Becomes frustrated when unsuccessful with both learning tasks and physical activities
Mrs. Brown also has the following anecdotal notes from her Fall parent-teacher conference with Andrews parents, both of whom attended the conference: Andrews father, Mr. Unger, works full time. Since Andrew and his two younger siblings were born, his mother has stayed home to care for the children. Mrs. Ungers native language is French. She appears to speak and understand English with little difficulty, although, she stated she is more comfortable with email and other written forms of communication. The family speaks both French and English at home. Mrs. Unger explained that Andrews experience with group programs before beginning kindergarten was mainly in family-based activities offered by the community, such as at the local library. She also noted that Andrew has always had a lot of energy, as do his siblings. Along with the familys two dogs, she describes them as all very lively.
Mrs. Brown draws on her experience to support and foster Andrews growth as best she can. However, after not seeing improvement, she shares her concerns with the schools special education teacher and asks for a prereferral intervention for Andrew. In turn, Andrews parents are notified, and the prereferral process, including forming a Child Support Team for Andrew, begins.

Based on the information in the Case Scenario on Andrew and research-based practices/strategies, use the Collaboration Plan Template document to develop a Collaboration Plan for Andrews Child Support Team. Follow the instructions on the template to complete all six parts of the Collaboration Plan.

Recently, there has been debate on where CAM provides safety approaches in promoting health. Some of these approaches have undergone vigorous evaluation and have been found to be safe and even effective in managing patients with chronic illness such as cancer, diabetes, and HTN. Some of the approaches of CAM include yoga, meditation, acupuncture, massage, and many others. These approaches are used to treat and even manage symptoms of chronic illness, for example cancer. In most cases, cancer patients tend to prefer using CAM approaches because it helps in managing pain and when used alongside standard or traditional medicine, it lessen the side effects of the treatment (Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) 2019). For example, chemotherapy has been known to have severe side effects such as nausea and vomiting and even having difficulty sleeping. These alternative approaches help in reducing the side effects and giving the patient ways to cope during the treatment. CAM therapies include vast arrays of botanical and nutritional products, which most of these have been approved by FDA. Another reason why patients tend to opt for CAM is because most of these supplements do not require prescription to purchase them. This means that it is the decision of the individual or the patient to decide what is best for them.
There have also been growing debate between holistic approach and allopathic care. Both of these are considered to promote healthcare. Holistic approach refers ways to provide support that focuses on the whole individual rather than not just their mental health needs. This means that the support also focuses on the physical and emotional needs of the person as well as social and spiritual wellbeing of the person. These aspects are considered important in the wellbeing of the individual. The aspects in holistic care aim at preventing disease rather than treating the symptoms (Evangelatos & Eliadi, 2019). On the other hand refers to science based or evidence based model. This is focused on more conventional and it is evidence based where it uses doctors and other professional healthcare providers such as nurses to treat symptoms using conventional approaches in medicine. All of these approaches, that is, allopathic and holistic care aim in promoting healthcare. The difference is that, unlike CAM or holistic care, allopathic medicine tends to depend on clinical studies and screening to establish diagnosis by focusing on a persons symptoms and signs before instilling treatment (Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) 2019). In my opinion, both of these approaches promote healthcare and because of this, I dont have any conflict if the patient decide to use either of them.

CAM refers to medical practices that are not considered to be part of standard medical care. People tend to prefer using CAM due to the safety and effectiveness of its practices. There are no proven data that they cure the chronic illness such as cancer but most of the patients tend to prefer it because it helps them cope with the diseases and mostly it helps them through the treatment phases. These practices help them by reducing the symptoms of cancer and even limiting the side effects of the treatment when they are used alongside standard medical practices (Kuo et al., 2018). Some examples of CAM approaches include acupuncture, yoga, massage, drinking green tea, and many others. These practices have also been considered safe because of their nature of using harmless practices to try and help the patients cope with the diseases or limit the severe side effects of the treatment. In addition to this, these approaches are also used to comfort the patients and ease their worries (Kuo et al., 2018). This is based on helping their spiritual and psychological wellbeing thus helping in their healing process. When these approaches are used alongside modern medicine or traditional approach, they have benefits the patients and most likely have higher positive results in terms of promoting health.
Despite the debate surrounding holistic and allopathic medicine, both of these approaches in care tend to promote healthcare. Holistic care focuses mainly on prevention where the practices are to maintain the connectedness of an individual to its environment, which is both internal and external (Evangelatos & Eliadi, 2019). On the other hand, allopathic medicine is an approach where it uses evidence based to promote healthcare, for example, it uses nurses, therapists, and doctors to treat symptoms of a disease such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension.
Both of these approaches have their own benefits. Holistic medicine includes the overall health improvement of an individual. It is important to note that the holistic care aims at improving the general health and the healing process of the individual, which includes physical health, and their emotional and spiritual health (Evangelatos & Eliadi, 2019). In holistic care, the practitioners are allowed to work with their patients to develop plans that aim to help health the mind, body, and spirit of the patients. On the other hand, allopathic care have several significant benefits when promoting health. In allopathic care, doctors are able to access latest scientific approaches in technology to make a diagnosis and provide the best alternative treatment of the disease. I have no conflict between allopathic and holistic care because they both are designed to promote healthcare.

Older people receiving long-term care in these settings may also require acute medical care so it was relevant to also look briefly at the general health provision for older people. Since the creation of the NHS older patients have been seen as a drain on resources diverting services away from other patient groups (Wilkinson and Hughes, 2006). Elderly care has always been one of the Cinderella services within the NHS, receiving less than adequate resources despite repeated attempts to ensure it was given priority in resource allocation (Ibid.). Numerous studies have focused on the social deprivation and abuse suffered by people in elderly care homes (Barton, 2009; Biggs et al., 2005; Robb, 2007; Townsend, 2002). The current debates about health care and older people focus on rationing, and on standards of care for the old both in hospitals and in residential and nursing homes. Evidence exists that older people are denied access to treatments provided for younger patient. (Aaron and Schwartz, 2004; Age Concern, 2007). The continuing poor quality of care for older people within the NHS has been the focus of considerable media attention (Abrams, 2008; Brindle, 2007; Evans 2007). In October 2007 The Observer newspaper launched a campaign to ensure that older people in hospital are treated with dignity, following reports of neglect. In the same month The Sunday Times launched a campaign for better care for the elderly in long-term care and highlighted abuse and indignity routinely suffered by people in residential and nursing homes. Both campaigns generated a large public response. It is important to note that long-term care is not free, but is means tested, the state paying only for those who cannot pay for themselves.1.1 The Findings of the Royal CommissionAccording to the Royal Commission Report, With Respect to Old Age: A Report by the Royal Commission on Long Term Care (2009), the present system of long term care is characterized by complexity and unfairness. No amount of statistics or cool analysis can take away the human despair which individuals feel when confronted with the system as it is’ (PA2). Although the Commissioners recognize that the Welfare State has considerably improved the lot of older people, they claim that as a society we have ceased to value old age. Many older people now live twenty to thirty years beyond retirement. The financial position of pensioners is variable but many are considerably poorer than those in other groups are, and this is a threat to their security in old age. The present NHS is performance led, resulting in earlier discharges. Discharge from hospital is a critical point for many older people, which, along with other crises can result in the perceived need for residential care. Older people can be forced to sell their homes and cut off their links with local communities by decisions, which are often hastily taken. Although residential and nursing homes may be caring and supportive, older people are then removed from sight and from society. The result is social exclusion of a whole section of society.1.2 The Commission’s RecommendationsThe Commission Report sets out in the first chapter the values that have guided its deliberations. The recommendations begin from the position that old age should not be seen as a problem, but as a time of life with fulfilment of its own. According to the Commissioners older people do continue to play a positive role in society by acting as careers, supporting families, by providing wisdom and advice and by playing an active part in society. However, these positive images are often over shadowed by negative ones. Underlying much of the political language about old age is assumption that old age is a problem. With the expected rise in the numbers of elderly and the rise in their proportion of the population this is thought to be a problem which will become increasingly insoluble in future years. However, such an approach treats the old as a homogenous group, which clearly they are not, and fails to recognize people as individuals with their own needs aspiration and perceptions. Moreover the Commission found that for the UK there is no ‘demographic timebomb’ as far as long-term care is concerned, and as a result costs of care would be affordable. Against these negative images, the Commission suggests a new understanding: older people should not simply be seen as the passive recipients of welfare, rather society should recognize the value inherent in older people, and the value in helping them to continue to realize their potential. The department of Education and Employment’s commitment to lifelong learning should mean learning for life beyond work and into the retirement years. The railway lines that pass through the centre of town are still a mass of broken overhead cables and blocked tracks.</p>

DCC Dimensional Analysis and Units & Significant Figures Project
PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIMENTThis experiment is meant to teach basic math skills required for lab throughout the semester.INTRODUCTION- Part I Significant FiguresWe will learn next week that each piece of equipment has a specific number of digits we should report when using that device. When we read a number from left to right, the information given by each subsequent digit indicates a higher level of precision in the number. Equipment that measures out to more place values are more precise than those that measure less digits. Think about the number of attendees at football game. 36,572 people were at the game it would seem like a more exact answer than if I told you there were 36,000 people in attendance. Which of these answers if correct? It depends on how we measured the number of people. Did I estimate by looking at the size of the stadium, or did I count every individual person? When taking a measurement in the lab, we should always report all certain digits on a device plus one uncertain digit (we call this reading between the lines). The number of digits a device reports are known as significant figures and include all certain digits plus one uncertain digit. Significant figures tells us how exact a measurement is and are critical when reporting scientific data because they give the reader an idea of how well you could actually measure/report your data. We all know that 1.5135 in is a much better measurement (more precise) than 1 in, the fact that 1.5135 has more significant figures is a clue to this. In the example above, reporting that there are 36,572 people at the game implies that I measured each person individually while reporting 36,000 implies that I estimated. Knowing how to look at the amount of significant figures in a number can give a clue as to how it was measured. Zero digits tend to be tricky when discussing significant figures (what if I actually had counted all of the individual people at the game, but by coincidence 36,000 people were in attendance exactly? There are a few rules that govern whether or not a number counts as significant, or if it is just there to hold the place value of other numbers.Rules for knowing which numbers are significant when looking at data directly: 1. All nonzero #s are significant (zeros are too if they are in between!!!!)a. 1.204 kg 4 significant figures2. Trailing (ending) zeros are significant ONLY if there is a decimal somewhere in the #a. 6.00 m 3 significant figures 600 m 1 significant figure3. Leading (beginning) zeros are NEVER significanta. 0.08 L and 002 L 1 significant figureHow do I round calculated numbers?Rules about significant figures on measured quantities also affect calculated numbers that we obtain for measurements. For example, if I want to know the density of water I could measure the mass and volume of a sample and divide. The calculated density would still need to reflect the amount of certainty seen in the original measurements. There are rules for determining how to round calculated answers so that they correctly exhibit the amount of uncertainty in the original measurements. With that being said, a number should never be rounded during a calculation until you are ready to report the answer to the question. Never use mathematically rounded numbers in your problems.Multiplying and dividing numbers (Where to round?) The LEAST number of significant figures in any number of the problem determines the number of significant figures in the answer. Let’s state that another way: a chain is no stronger than its weakest link. Do your calculation all the way through and then round the number. To determine how to round, retract your steps of the calculation keeping track of how many figures each step should have. Then use them to round the final answer.Part II Units and Dimensional AnalysisUnits are one of the most important aspects to any measurement taken in science. A unit must always be placed at the end of a number so that the meaning of the number is known. Some of the standard (SI units) for measurements are given below. A metric prefix is a term that is placed before the base units name to signify a multiple or fraction of the expressed number by 10. For example, the distance from New Orleans to Baton Rouge is 130,000 meters. It may be more useful to express this number in kilometers than in meters. This distance between New Orleans and Baton Rouge in kilometers would be 130 km (a much easier number to digest). If I want to know the length of a piece of hair a smaller unit like centimeters (cm) may be more useful. The metric system is all based on the power of 10. If the prefixes are known, they work for all different types of units. Dimensional analysis is a technique used in science to keep track of units when performing calculations. If is important that you learn to master this technique. If you know how to do dimensional analysis, you should rarely get a problem wrong (even if you dont remember the equation). There are three rules to remember: 1) write out your units!! (units with per go on opposite sides of a fraction) 2) Units that match on the top and bottom of the fractions will cancel out 3) Work the numbers after the units when getting an answer (check units first, then plug in numbers). Numbers on the top get multiplied and numbers on the bottom are divided. This is based on one of the conversion factors. Feet are placed on the bottom of the fraction so that they will cancel with the feet given in the problem. Since the fraction we are multiplying by has a value of one, the answer so far (24 inches) is equal to the original 2.0 feet. Each time we have multiplied by a fraction equal to “1” so that the answer will be equal to the 2.0feet we started out with.
